U-Haul – Alex Waggoner (2018)

In her latest body of work, Alex Waggoner explores the ever-changing streetscape of downtown Charleston, SC. As the city continues to undergo massive development projects, the historic charm of this coastal peninsula has adopted a new identity, one comprised of multistory apartment dwellings and franchised businesses moving into the blocks once occupied by family-owned shops and restaurants. Streets have become lined with retroreflective barriers, chainlink fences, and a plethora of signs announcing “SIDEWALK CLOSED” or “DETOUR AHEAD.”

Waggoner’s paintings explore these scenes of the city’s physical reconstruction, while also providing an ode to the landmark buildings that now serve as backdrops to the development taking place; a new vision of Charleston emerging right before our eyes.

Alex graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2012. She lives in Charleston, South Carolina and paints in her home studio.

alex_3-41In 2014, she was one of the Regional Emerging Artist in Residence at Artspace in Raleigh, North Carolina. She will be an Artist in Residence at The Gibbes in the summer of 2018.
